A Photograph as Historical Evidence
Remembering football team Trikki through family photographs and community memory in Trikala, Greece.
What can one football photograph tell us about a community?
A photograph can preserve more than faces and a moment in time. Read alongside family testimony, club history and local newspapers, it can help reconstruct the people, places and relationships behind a football team.
Maria Christakou’s project follows Trikki, a football club established in Trikala in 1949. The surviving family photographs provide a starting point for exploring local sport, neighbourhood connections, collective memory and the ways a community remembers its past.
Three established clubs were active in Trikala.
Trikki was informally founded by local players.
PAOT and Heracles merged into AET.
Trikki joined the Thessaly Football Association.
A newspaper revisited the club’s history.
Football and neighbourhood life in Trikala
By 1947, Trikala had several football clubs. These included Achilleus (blue and white), PAOT (yellow and black), and Heracles (green and white).
In 1949, young players from Saraya, Tabakika, Kallithea, Gardikaki, Kosmali, Stathmos, Trana Mnimata and Flegiou informally founded Trikki. The club wore green and white, and the players bought their own uniforms.
The changing rooms were first in the basement of general manager Athanasios Christakos’s house on Syngrou Street; later, the team used Georgios Kyritsis’s home on Katsimidou Street, near the city stadium. Christakos also contributed as a coach.
A changing football landscape
In spring 1950, PAOT and Heracles merged to create the Athletic Union of Trikala (AET), which played in red and white. Physical education teacher Vasileios Peligos contributed to the new club.
In 1951, Trikki was officially recognised and entered the Thessaly Football Association. Alongside Diagoras, it competed in the Second Division championship.
The photographs capture the players and supporters whose relationships gave the club its place in Trikala’s sporting life.
Faces, names and shared history
Club memory includes more than the playing eleven. The submitted archive records board members, coaches, volunteers and a long list of footballers active during the 1950s.
Between 1951 and 1960, club administration included G. Sakkas, Karabekos Leon, Athanasios Christakos and others. The project identifies Georgios Ziogas, Christos Kakos and Dimitrios Premetis as coaches during the same period.
Photographs preserve a visual record of people whose names might otherwise be remembered only within families or scattered club records.
The names below are transcribed from the participant’s submitted photo essay. Original spellings and abbreviations are retained pending verification against the family archive and historical sources.

Trikki in the local press
More than fifty years after Trikki was founded, a 2009 newspaper feature revisited the club’s history with photographs, names and recollections.
Its headline, Ταξίδι στον χρόνο (“Journey through time”), shows how the story moved beyond family collections and became part of a broader public account of Trikala’s sporting past.
Photographic sources preserve particular moments. Newspaper reporting puts them into circulation again, inviting later generations to recognise people, connect experiences and ask new questions.
The team anthem
The submitted project attributes a Trikki anthem to Sotirios Gorgogetas, a player during the 1957–1958 season. The source includes the following excerpt in English:
“Trikki is a team
with a starting lineup of aces,
all brave lads, all fine young men.
With Christakos as captain
and Miga’s curling shot,
the ball flies into the net…”
Excerpt as presented in the supplied photo essay (page 6). The source does not provide the complete lyrics.
“And what remains when people and moments are gone?”
The memories that continue to give life meaning.
This photo essay places family photographs in conversation with the documented history of Trikki and its later public remembrance. It asks how photographs acquire historical meaning through the people who preserve, interpret and share them.
