Privacy, rights and credits
Public history requires transparency not only about evidence and interpretation, but also about the rights, consent and responsibilities attached to publication.
Participant projects
Participants retain copyright in their original contributions. Publication through Who Owns Memory? is non-exclusive and intended for non-commercial educational, reporting, archival and dissemination purposes.
Project creators remain responsible for the accuracy of their historical claims, quotations, translations, source references, rights and permissions.
Images, testimony & living people
Images, recordings and identifying information concerning living private persons should be published only where appropriate permission and a defensible historical reason exist. New oral-history material requires informed consent.
When rights or consent are unclear, the material should not be used.
